Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

Word Of the Head Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is one of the first engineering departments to be established in Libyan universities. Since its inception and the launch of its scientific and educational career in 1961 AD, the department kept pace with the development of industry and the needs of society for engineers in this field, and contributed to the graduation of many qualified engineers who were the cornerstone of the process of industrialization and production in Libya. Mechanical engineering can be defined as an applied engineering discipline in which the basic physical laws are employed in order to analyze and design various mechanical and industrial systems. Mechanical engineering is the science and art of formulating, designing, developing, controlling systems and mechanical components, and converting energy into useful work. Mechanical engineers, in their various disciplines, work to develop machines and products and create promising processes that provide a better life for people all over the world. The study programs of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering are designed in line with the foundations and standards of international engineering education in line with quality standards, and in a manner that achieves the vision and goals of the department, the most important of which is the graduation of qualified engineers with high efficiency that can serve the goals and development plans of the state; in various areas within the scope of competence. The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Tripoli has three divisions. Each division seeks to instill  a deep understanding of the fundamental principles in its field. The Division of Applied Engineering focused on concepts related to theories of the work of machines, control and vibrations, and in the Division of Power Engineering, concepts focused on the areas of: thermal sciences, fluid mechanics, energy and its transformations; Renewable energies, power generation plants, internal combustion machines, air conditioning, refrigeration and desalination, while the concepts in the Industrial Engineering and Production Division focused on the field of studying, planning and evaluating different production methods and finding the optimal means to produce a product with high standards and quality according to the most important methods and methods of quality control, as well Carrying out economic feasibility studies for industrial projects and how to manage them. The department currently includes a group of distinguished faculty members with high experience, with a total number of 50 faculty members, as the number of faculty members who hold the scientific degree “professor” is 15, while those who hold the degree of “associate professor” number 13, 5 “assistant professors”, and the rest are 6 lecturers and 11 assistant lecturers, all of whom work continuously to produce honorable outputs in terms of quality and efficiency. The department also includes a young group of teaching assistants, engineers and technicians on whom the department relies to be the future nucleus to complement the academic journey. We also do not forget the role of the department staff, which is no less important than others with regard to completing and following up administrative procedures for faculty members and students. The department has many study laboratories in the various fields of mechanical and industrial engineering, in addition to a mechanical workshop that includes: a machining workshop (cutting and shaping metals), a metal casting workshop, a welding and blacksmithing workshop, and a carpentry workshop. Work is underway to develop the workshop by adding advanced computerized machines such as CNC Machines and tensile and hardness measuring devices. Wherever technology is present, the mechanical engineer has a firm foothold and is an effective element in his environment. Thus, job opportunities for him are widely available in various fields, and in many cases he is preferred over other specializations because he possesses a wide base of information on the basic principles and self-experience that qualifies him to deal with technology and its faster development. We would also like to point out here that the graduates of the department have proven their worth when completing their postgraduate studies at home and abroad in various countries of the world. In general, in developed industrial countries, there can be no mechanical engineer who is unemployed. A mechanical engineer can work in various fields. We can list the most important of them in the following: power generation plants - desalination plants - production plants in various food industries - engineering - electrical ... etc. – Crude oil production and transportation – Gas production, transportation and distribution – Water transportation and distribution systems – Sewage systems as well as auxiliary units in hospitals, airports, large markets and government facilities that need basic services such as periodic maintenance, air conditioning and refrigeration systems … etc. The mechanical engineer can also be part of the research teams in specialized research centers and institutions such as the Industrial Research Center - Solar Energy Research Center - Oil Research Center - Research and Development Centers….and others. In addition to theoretical lectures, laboratory experiments, and graduation projects, which represent an essential part of the graduation requirements for obtaining a bachelor's degree, the department is keen to communicate with institutions related to the specialty by conducting some joint studies. It also conducts field visits to successful local companies and power generation stations, and all Institutions and research centers through which the student can come into contact with the actual fields of work and acquire sufficient knowledge of the reality of the labor market in which he may engage later after graduation. Due to the presence of a group of distinguished faculty members who hold high academic degrees, so there is a distinguished program for postgraduate master’s studies for more than twenty-five years, many competencies came out of them who are currently a faculty member in the department, and this program is constantly undergoing development. In the end, we must search for new energies that do not currently exist (oil and natural gas) and which are threatened with depletion or termination. Accordingly, the world today has focused most of the research on searching for clean alternative or renewable energies.
