As part of the collaboration between the Faculty of Science and the Oil Research Center, and within the context of strengthening ties between the academic and practical sectors, the Department of Geophysics hosted a valuable scientific lecture this morning, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the Faculty of Science – Plasma Building. The lecture was titled:
"Comparison Between Measurement and Calculation of Dose Resulting from Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials in Produced Water Lakes from Oil Production in Libya."
The lecture was delivered by Engineer Azeddine Ahmed Al-Ghali, Radiation Protection Specialist at the Oil Research Center. He began with a simplified introduction to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMs) and their decay chains, explaining their characteristics, sources, and environmental impact. He then presented a case study from one of the sites (Site X) where these materials were detected during his professional career. Drawing on his fieldwork and technical observations, he added a practical and applied dimension to the lecture.
The event was attended by a distinguished audience, led by Mr. Ibrahim Amish, Head of the Geophysics Department, and Professor Ramadan Al-Mabrouk Al-Jadi, Dean of the Faculty of Science, along with a group of faculty members from the Physics Department, engineers from the Oil Research Center, and a number of postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Geophysics Department.
Following the lecture, an open scientific discussion workshop was held, during which participants exchanged ideas and experiences in a productive academic atmosphere.
At the conclusion of the event, Professor Ramadan Al-Mabrouk Al-Jadi, Dean of the Faculty, emphasized the importance of expanding avenues of scientific cooperation with research centers in Libya, highlighting its positive impact on enhancing scientific research and improving the outcomes of higher education in the country.
Special thanks and appreciation are extended to Engineer Azeddine Al-Ghali for his valuable scientific contribution and for his efforts in enriching knowledge in the fields of radiation protection and the oil industry.
