The Faculty of Arts and Languages at University of Tripoli is considered one of the leading academic institutions in Libya, combining the authenticity of the humanities with the modernity of language studies and translation. Its establishment in its current form was the culmination of a long process of academic and administrative development, crowned by a strategic decision that contributed to strengthening interdisciplinary integration and expanding the horizons of education and scientific research.
First: The New Designation and the Merger Decision (2023)As part of the efforts to develop higher education institutions in Libya and enhance integration among disciplines, Decision No. (533) of 2023, issued by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, mandated the merger of the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Languages at the University of Tripoli under the new designation: Faculty of Arts and Languages.
Second: The Faculty of Languages Before the MergerBefore becoming part of the new entity, the Faculty of Languages was an independent and specialized academic institution with a distinguished history in language teaching and translator training.
Major Historical Milestones- 1986–1987: Established under the name Al-Fateh Center for Languages.
- 1988: Transformed into an independent faculty pursuant to Decision No. (35).
- 2008: The Department of Translation and Arabization was established, with a strong emphasis on field training and practical application.
The Faculty of Arts, in its modern administrative form, was established during the academic years 1996–1997, following the transfer of human and material resources from the Faculty of Education.
Development of the Name and Institutional AffiliationThroughout its history, the faculty underwent several transformations reflecting the evolution of the university and its academic institutions:
- 1971: Faculty of Education.
- 1986: Center for Humanities.
- 1988: Transfer of some components to the Faculty of Languages.
- 1999: Reinstatement of the designation Faculty of Arts.
- 2002: Merger of several faculties under the name Faculty of Arts.
These transformations contributed to consolidating the faculty’s position as a major center for humanities and social sciences studies at the University of Tripoli.
